As Chief Investment Officer at Team Hewins, John Bussel aims to bring the financial professionalism and knowledge used by great institutions to our individual and family clients.  “When someone becomes a Team Hewins’ client, they quickly gain an appreciation for our fiduciary spirit and rigorous supervision,” John explains, “along with the sophisticated investment choices that institutions have long enjoyed.”

John has seen all sides of investment financial services. He draws from his experience as Assistant Vice President and Investment Officer for Fiduciary Trust International, where he developed his knowledge of industries, markets, and portfolio management. In 1996, John sought a more personal side to investing and became a Financial Advisor for Prudential Securities.

He grew to prefer the unique characteristics of a fee-only firm like Team Hewins and transitioned to independent advising in 1999.  “I wanted to be a trusted resource for people to get sound, objective advice,” John says. “I like knowing we are liberating people to pursue their life passions without having to lose sleep about what’s happening to their finances.” He joined Hewins Financial Advisors in 2004  and became Chief Investment Officer in 2016 before transitioning into the role at Team Hewins.

Working with private clients and family-based foundations, John has a special interest in family wealth management. Understanding the wishes and needs of each family member, while leveraging the benefits of collective investment planning, is an extension of the dedication and care he takes with all clients.

John earned his BA in History and Spanish from Duke University in 1991.  He is actively engaged in his community as Vice Chairman of the Barry University Board of Trustees in Miami Shores, Director and Executive Committee member of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, and President of the American Jewish Committee Miami Chapter. He serves on the boards of the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education and the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut.

A member of the CFA Institute and CFA Miami, John’s professional contributions also earned him a spot on Advisor Hub’s 200 RIAs To Watch 2024.
